ASUS Transformer Prime TF201 gets Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update
The folks from ASUS gave North American Transformer Pad Prime and Infinity owners a tease yesterday, telling them that the TF201 and TF700 models would receive an update to Android 4.1 within the next three days. Today, the Tawianese firm's made good on half its promise, delivering Jelly Bean to the Prime OTA. We confirmed that the update is rolling out, as our in-house TF201 has, indeed, been upgraded to version 4.1.1. Alas, Infinity owners are still sans their software goodies, but ASUS still has plenty of time left in that 72 hour window.

Curiosity Mars rover tells us that it is feeling pretty good so far
For the past month, the Curiosity Mars Rover has been methodically giving itself a health checkup, which it has been passing almost flawlessly, says NASA.

Since?Curiosity landed?inside Mars' Gale Crater on Aug. 5, researchers have been systematically checking out the rover's systems and its 10 science instruments to make sure they're all in good working condition. Those inspections have gone very well and should be finished by the end of Curiosity's next Martian day, or sol, mission team members said today.
"The success so far of these activities has been outstanding," said Curiosity mission manager Jennifer Trosper, of NASA's?Jet Propulsion Laboratory?in Pasadena, Calif. "Throughout every phase of the checkouts, Curiosity has performed almost flawlessly."

"Our estimate for the checkout activities was 25 sols, and it's taken us 26," Trosper told reporters today, explaining that a 12-sol stretch of driving activities brings Curiosity to its current Sol 37 on Mars. "So, not bad."
Getting ready to drive again
Curiosity has spent the last six sols methodically testing out its 7-foot-long (2.1 meters) robotic arm, which bears several tools on its end, including a rock-boring drill and a camera called the?Mars?Hand Lens Imager, or MAHLI.
One more sol of arm checkouts remains, Trosper said. The team also plans to point Curiosity's Mast Camera (Mastcam) toward the sky today, to watch the Martian moon Phobos cross the face of the sun. Then the $2.5 billion robot will be ready to move its six wheels again for the first time in more than a week.
"After that, starting on Friday evening, the plan is to drive, drive, drive," Trosper said.
Curiosity will stop when it finds a rock scientists deem a suitable target for observations with MAHLI and the rover's Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer instrument (APXS), which also sits on the robotic arm's turret, Trosper said.
APXS measures the abundance of chemical elements in rock and soil by exposing the material to X-rays and alpha particles (helium nuclei, consisting of two protons and two neutrons).

Cancer overtakes heart disease as top US killer
NEW YORK (AP) ? Cancer has overtaken heart disease as the No. 1 killer among Hispanics in the U.S., and the rest of the country may be only a few years behind.
The change is not exactly cause for alarm. Death rates for both cancer and heart disease have been dropping for Hispanics and everyone else. It's just that heart disease deaths have fallen faster, largely because of improved treatment and prevention, including the development of cholesterol-lowering drugs.
Overall, cancer will probably replace heart disease as the nation's top cause of death in the next 10 years, said Rebecca Siegel of the American Cancer Society, lead author of a study reporting the new findings. Government health statisticians think the crossover point could be reached as early as this year, or at least in the next two or three years.
The reason it has already happened among Hispanics is that they are younger on average than non-Hispanic whites and blacks. And cancer tends to kill people earlier in life than heart disease, for decades the nation's top cause of death.
The shift could bring about a change in disease-prevention efforts, government spending priorities and people's attitudes.
"We've been so focused on heart disease mortality for so long. ... This may change the way people look at their risk," said Robert Anderson, who oversees the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control branch that monitors death statistics.
The study is being published in the September/October issue of a cancer society publication, CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.
Cancer society researchers looked at federal death data for 2009 and found that 29,935 Hispanics died of cancer and 29,611 of heart disease. It was the first year in which cancer deaths surpassed heart disease in that ethnic group.
Cancer is also the leading cause of death for Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders. And it is now the leading killer in 18 states, according to 2009 numbers from the CDC.
Hispanics are the nation's largest and fastest-growing major ethnic group, and many of them are young immigrants from Mexico. Most heart disease deaths are in people 65 and older. The vast majority of Hispanics in the U.S. are under 55.
The story is different in Mexico, which has an older population. There, diabetes is the biggest killer, with cancer No. 2, according to 2009 statistics from the Pan American Health Organization.
Interestingly, none of the states where cancer has overtaken heart disease is in the Southwest, which has large Hispanic populations. Instead, most are in the nation's northern tier, including Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin and the four states of upper New England.

Take Noam Gershony, who won gold for Israel yesterday in wheelchair tennis at the London Paralympics. Mr. Gershony, an Apache helicopter pilot, was injured and his co-pilot killed when their craft collided with another helicopter during Israel's 2006 war with Lebanon. Gershony says he never expected to win gold at the 2012 Paralympics in London, and his modest, almost bashful smile upon wheeling up to the top of the podium said as much. Only one Israeli has ever won gold at the Olympic Games, windsurfer Gal Fridman in 2004. Gershony's gold, though captured on the less-heralded stage of the Paralympics, was much celebrated in the Israeli media this weekend.?

NEW YORK (AP) ? Alabama and LSU are back atop The Associated Press college football poll, holding down Nos. 1 and 2 the way they did most of last season.
The Crimson Tide is No. 1 for the third straight week, and it was almost unanimous. Alabama received 58 of 60 first-place votes. LSU got the other two.
The Southeastern Conference rivals were ranked first and second for eight weeks during last season before eventually meeting in the BCS title game. The difference last year was LSU was first and Alabama second ? until the Tide won the national championship game.
LSU moved up to No. 2 this week after Southern California's first loss of the season. USC slipped 11 spots to 13th after losing 21-14 at Stanford.
Stanford jumped from 21st to ninth.

(Reuters) - Shipment dates for Apple Inc's new iPhone slipped by a week on the first day of sales on Friday, suggesting strong demand for the slimmer, lighter and faster version of the smartphone.
Within an hour of the start of presales, the www.apple.com store was projecting shipments would take two weeks to fulfill, said Cross Research, an independent research house.?
Apple started taking pre-orders for the iPhone 5 at midnight Pacific Time (0700 GMT) on Friday, with the first deliveries set for one week's time.?
(Note: If you're still?trying to get a phone on Sept. 21, you should try pre-ordering one through your wireless carrier or a major retailer, or ? better yet ??plan to wait in line on launch day at the Apple store or one of those other?iPhone sellers.)
"We believe the fast sell out indicates both high levels of demand and constrained supply," Cross Research said in a note.
"However, given that the company announced an aggressive rollout schedule, we assume management's plan includes a rapid increase in production."
On Thursday, a host of analysts raised their iPhone sales forecasts to reflect the quick consumption of the iPhone 5, with some saying more than 30 million Apple smartphones may be sold this quarter.
Apple shares rose 1.9 percent to a new all-time high of $695.86 on Friday, before easing back a little to $694.33 in heavy early morning trading on the Nasdaq.?
Apple was not immediately available for comment.

U.S.: Syria must end nuclear stonewalling, conflict no excuse
VIENNA (Reuters) - The United States accused Syria on Friday of using the "brutal repression" of its people waging an uprising as an excuse not to address U.N. nuclear watchdog concerns about suspected past illicit nuclear activity in the Arab state.
For its part, Syria insisted at a debate of the governing board of the International Atomic Energy Agency that it had agreed last year with the IAEA on how to handle the issue. This was denied on Monday by the IAEA chief in a speech to the board.
The IAEA has long sought access to a site in Syria's desert Deir al-Zor region that U.S. intelligence reports say was a nascent, North Korean-designed reactor designed to produce plutonium for nuclear weapons before Israel bombed it in 2007.
The Vienna-based watchdog has also been requesting information about three other sites that may have been linked to Deir al-Zor.
IAEA chief Yukiya Amano said earlier this yeart Syria had asked for understanding of its "delicate situation" in response to requests for Syrian cooperation with his inspectors' inquiry.
President Bashar al-Assad is fighting a 17-month-old revolt in which more than 27,000 people have been killed.
U.S. IAEA envoy Robert Wood said Syria's "own destabilizing actions are no justification for its refusal" to abide by its commitments under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), set up to prevent the spread of atomic weaponry.
"The Assad regime is using its brutal repression of the Syrian people as an excuse for not cooperating with the agency's investigation," he told the closed-door board governors' session, according to a copy of his speech.
"SO-CALLED ACTION PLAN"
Syria says Deir al-Zor was a conventional military facility but the IAEA concluded in May 2011 that it was "very likely" to have been a reactor that should have been declared to its anti-proliferation inspectors.
"Syria must allow access to all relevant locations, materials and persons, including in particular the three additional sites suspected of having a functional relationship to the clandestine Deir al-Zor," Wood said.
Syrian Ambassador Bassam Al-Sabbagh repeated his country's position that Deir al-Zor was not a nuclear reactor and said an agreement had been reached with senior IAEA officials last October on an action plan on how to clarify the matter.
According to one diplomat present, Al-Sabbagh told the board that if Syria could convince the IAEA that Deir al-Zor was a non-nuclear facility then the issue of the three other sites was "moot".
Amano, the IAEA director-general, did not respond at Friday's board session, but on Monday he told the opening day of the week-long board meeting: "I wish to make clear that no agreement was ever reached on a so-called action plan."
The veteran Japanese diplomat later told a news conference that "some options" had been discussed during the IAEA team's visit to Damascus last year but that they were rejected after a careful review by the IAEA.
"It was not sufficient because the so-called action plan is limited only to the Deir al-Zor site and Syria was not ready to discuss other locations," Amano said.
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) of mostly developing states said in a statement read out by Iranian Ambassador Ali Asghar Soltanieh that it welcomed "Syria's resolve to continue cooperating" with the IAEA.

Roddick stays alive at US Open, beats Fognini
NEW YORK (AP) ? Andy Roddick took up a new tradition in his final tournament.
His friend and opponent, Italian Fabio Fognini, asked to exchange shirts after their third-round match at the U.S. Open, a la soccer players and their jerseys.
It's a memento of the American's 7-5, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-4 win Sunday at a pulsating Arthur Ashe Stadium.
"That was a cool gesture," Roddick said.
Asked if he handed over the sweaty top he wore during the 3-hour match, Roddick shot back: "Disgusting. No, I didn't. He got a washed one."
Roddick's career will last at least one more round ? but staving off retirement now gets far tougher. His next opponent is a fellow former U.S. Open champ: seventh-seeded Juan Martin del Potro, who won in 2009.
"We'll go out and we'll give it a go," Roddick said of preparing for the match. "I'm not really planning anything. I'm kind of winging this thing as I go."
Del Potro defeated fellow Argentine Leonardo Mayer 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 (9).
"I know this is special, this day, for him, but I'm doing my job," del Potro said. "I will try to be focused on my match and doing my things, my shots. The match is going to be very tough. But if I play in high level, will be tough for both players."
The highest-seeded American man, No. 9 John Isner, exited a Grand Slam tournament with a five-set loss for the fourth time this year, defeated 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 by No. 19 Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany. The match ended at 2:26 a.m. Monday, tying the tournament record for latest finish.
Novak Djokovic, the defending champion, beat No. 31 Julien Benneteau in straight sets and will meet No. 18 Stanislas Wawrinka for a quarterfinal berth. No. 4 David Ferrer got past two-time major champion Lleyton Hewitt 7-6 (9), 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 and now meets No. 13 Richard Gasquet, who eliminated two-time NCAA champion Steve Johnson 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-3.
In women's action, top-seeded Victoria Azarenka beat 73rd-ranked Anna Tatishvili 6-2, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows for the first time. Azarenka has dropped only 10 games through four matches heading into a showdown against defending champion Sam Stosur, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over 18-year-old Laura Robson of Britain, whose breakthrough run included wins against past major champions Kim Clijsters and Li Na.
Maria Sharapova, a four-time Grand Slam title winner, rallied from a break down in the third set after a rain delay to beat No. 19 Nadia Petrova 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. She plays No. 11 Marion Bartoli, the 2007 Wimbledon runner-up, who came back to defeat 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 1-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Robson beat four-time major champion Clijsters in the second round Wednesday, sending the 29-year-old Belgian into retirement. It was the next day, Roddick's 30th birthday, that he surprisingly let the world know he had planned to walk away from the sport whenever this visit to Flushing Meadows ends.
The 59th-ranked Fognini told Roddick after the match that he had a request for the 2003 U.S. Open champ and would tell him more in the locker room. Fognini now owns an authentic Roddick shirt that will always remind him of the scintillating moments from their match.
One highlight included Fognini's full-sprint, back-to-the-net, between-the-legs shot. When Roddick returned it with a lunging volley winner into the open court to end the point, Fognini chucked his racket all the way to the service box.
"That's about as cleanly as you can hit a between-the-legs passing shot. He hit the thing from Jersey and almost won the point," Roddick said. "That was fun."
The key to the match came in the second-set tiebreaker, when Fognini took the first point, and Roddick the rest.
At 1-all, Roddick really came alive, as did the partisan group in the stands, when he smacked a winner and gestured vigorously.
"I played that point perfectly. It was so pretty, it should have been framed," Fognini said with a smile, "and he ruined it with a down-the-line passing shot that was crazy."
Roddick followed that with a pair of aces at 126 mph and 131 mph and pretty much was on his way.
Asked if he was pacing himself in the third set, which he lost, Roddick replied: "Man, I don't have time to pace myself."
The time between matches can be draining, too, the uncharted territory of readying himself for the end of his career while trying to postpone that moment a few more days.
"You're kind of smiling, humming, whistling, walking around, and you feel pretty good about it. All of a sudden, you have to say goodbye to someone. It's like this gut-check moment. It's these extreme emotions from five minutes to the next five minutes," Roddick said. "You think you know what's going on, but I don't think there's any way to prepare yourself for it."

Writer by Night: Jenny Ringo in Shooting People's Film of the Month!
As of right now, Jenny Ringo and the Monkey's Paw is in first place in Shooting People's Film of the Month competition!!!
So here's how this works.

We're currently in Round 1 which is open until the 20th of September. In order to get through to Round 2 we need to stay in the Top 5 until then.
In Round 2 the votes get reset and the process starts again. If we can get into the top 3 in Round 2?this months guest judge, Danny Boyle,?watches the film and gives us some feedback.?He also?picks a winner, but to be honest having the film seen by Danny Boyle is a big enough achievement in itself!
The only problem is only Shooting People members can vote and you?have to pay to be a member. So here's what I need -

My strategy is to try to stay at the top for as long as possible in the hope of picking up a few extra stars from curious passers-by. It's going to be a massive challenge to stay in the competition. Our film is about five times longer than most of the other entries so it's a bigger ask to get strangers?to watch it. Last month the films that made it through Round 1 all had around 400 stars so we've got a really long way to go yet! But I have a few more tricks up my sleeve yet and have only called in favours from a handful of the filmmakers I know so far, so?I'm confident we're in with a good chance.
I'll post updates as the month goes on. If we do win I'm going to record a commentary track for the film and post it online.

Enjoying The Moment In My Online Home Based Business
I?m sitting here this Saturday morning in my online home based business looking over the Gulf of Mexico. I?ve rented a condo on the beach on Sanibel Island on the west coast of Florida with my wife and some friends for the long labor day weekend. My son has begun his freshman year at college at my alma-mater, Florida International University and he is comfortably situated in his dorm room.
I?ve got my notebook computer, a wireless connection, a hot cup of coffee and I?m sitting here comfortably on the patio writing my daily blog. I am living the internet lifestyle. Regularly I work out of my home office. I?m doing what I love everyday running my online home based business. I set my own hours, but I have a passion for what I am doing so it doesn?t really feel like work.
It is quite different from the over thirty years I spent getting up every day and dealing with a painful commute to a job where I wasn?t happy, appreciated for my value or compensated well. I made the decision about a year ago to gather the information I needed to create the life that I knew I was capable of living. Now I am enjoying the rewards of my efforts. I continue to educate myself each day as I add value to myself as an internet marketing consultant.
I do the things all of us who want to be successful as entrepreneurs and run an online home based business need to do. I continually work to improve myself, both personally and professionally. I continue to develop my knowledge base and skills in internet marketing so I can be of greater value to others who can use my help. Samsung to review 250 Chinese suppliers for labor violations
SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co said on Monday it would inspect 250 Chinese companies which make products for the South Korean firm to ensure no labor laws are broken after a U.S.-based group accused one of its suppliers of using child labor.
Samsung also said its audit into working conditions at an HEG Electronics facility in Huizhou in southern China found no under-aged workers. New York-based China Labor Watch said last month seven children younger than 16 were working in the factory that makes phones and DVD players for Samsung.
But Samsung said the audit identified several instances of inadequate management and potentially unsafe practices such as overtime beyond local regulations, improper safety measures and a system of fines for tardiness or absences.
"Samsung has demanded that HEG immediately improve its working conditions... If HEG fails to meet Samsung's zero tolerance policy on child labor, the contract will be immediately severed," Samsung said in a statement.
It said it would conduct inspections for all 105 supplier companies in China which produce goods solely for Samsung by the end of September, and review, via documentation, by the end of the year another 144 suppliers that makes products for it and other firms.
"If supplier companies are found to be in violation of our policies and corrective actions not taken, Samsung will terminate its contract with those supplier companies," Samsung said.
The move follows allegations earlier this year that Apple Inc's products were assembled in China amid multiple violations of labor law, including extreme hours.
Apple and its main contract manufacturer Foxconn Technology Group, whose subsidiary Hon Hai Precision Industry assembles Apple devices in China, later agreed to tackle violations of conditions among the 1.2 million workers assembling iPhones and iPads. That landmark decision could change the way Western companies do business in China.
