Crazy dieters do not get the benefit of a nutritious meal. (Creative Commons)
Spring break is always bittersweet. For some students, the week will be spent at an exotic location, tanning, relaxing and taking advantage of a lower drinking age. However, cloudless beaches go hand in hand with bikinis. The task of putting on such an unforgiving item of clothing can be daunting, which is why crash diets are popular solution.?I tried out the fad by eating only vegetables, fruit and Greek yogurt every meal for a week before spring break. Surprisingly, the first 3 days were not absolute torture; I could still work out at the same intensity. There was no intense hunger.?
On the fourth day, my body started to feel it. Fatigue set it. My mind was cloudy and forgetful. I began to grasp why doctors don?t recommend crash dieting. However, I plan on finishing the seven days out of stubborn determination but will never attempt one of these insane diets again. My crash diet is pretty G-rated compared to other popular ones such as the Master Cleanse and Liquid Diet. ?
General Crash Diet
A typical crash diet entails eating only very low-calorie foods for a period of three to 10 days and avoiding all others. Common foods are celery, carrots, grapefruit and spinach. Some diets require only eating one food over and over again, such as only eating grapefruit on the grapefruit diet. Dieters theorize eating a lot of low-calorie food will keep them full while taking in minimal calories.?
Master Cleanse?
Beyonc??claims she lost considerable weight on the Master Cleanse for role in the movie Dreamgirls in 2006. The diet is actually more of a fast, with participants drinking special herbal tea in the morning, drinking six to 12 ?lemonades? throughout the day and herbal tea again at night. The lemonade is composed of fresh lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper, according to the Master Cleanse.?
Liquid Diet
Liquid dieters only drink water, tea, fruit juice and broth for three to 14 days. However, depending on the type, fruit juice is actually high in calories as well as sugar. Some broths are high in sodium as well.?
What Doctors Say
Doctor?s don?t recommend crash dieting. For one, it doesn?t work. As soon as you being to eat normally, the weight returns, according to CNN Health. Eating limited foods also causes malnutrition, which has negative side effects such as fatigue. Extreme dieting can also trigger you to binge (eating loads of calories at once) and then swing back to extreme dieting creating a diet/binge cycle. ?
The best way to loose weight requires patience. Weight loss around 1-3 lbs per week without crazy diets is the healthier route. The concept is simple: focus on eating fruits, vegetables, protein and whole grains while also exercising on a consistent basis.?
